Eye Examinations

Examinations are provided by a combination of the doctor and the paraoptometric assistants. We use the latest in computer and laser technology. Typically, it includes:
  • Medical History
  • Measurement of visual acuity
  • Pupil dilation (to evaluate the back part of the eyes)
  • Intraocular pressure (Glaucoma)
  • Analysis
  • Diagnosis
  • Prescription (lenses or medicine)
  • Prognosis
  • And More

Recommended Eye Examination Intervals

Unlike the rest of your body, your eyes rarely hurt when something is wrong. Do not rely on changes in your vision, broken glasses or lost contacts to remind you of your next appointment. Follow the advice of the experts at the American Optometric Association:
  • Birth-24 months: Usually preformed by pediatrician
  • 2-5 years old: an examination at 3 years of age
  • 6-18 years old: an examination before entering 1st grade and every 2 years following*
  • 19-40 years old: every 2 or 3 years*
  • 41-60 years old: every 2 years*
  • 61 and older: every year*
*Patients should be advised to seek eye care more frequently than the recommended re-examination interval if new ocular, visual or systemic health problems develop. In addition, the optometrist may recommend more frequent re-examinations of certain patients at risk. Such patients include: those with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of glaucoma; those working in occupations that are highly demanding visually or eye hazardous; those taking prescription or nonprescription drugs with ocular side effects; and those with other health concerns or conditions. (From AOA Clinical Practice Guidelines)

LASIK

LAser in SItu Keratomileusis, means to reshape the cornea without disturbing the adjoining tissue. This reshaping allows you to see without corrective lenses! We know that you as a patient may be deterred from LASIK due to all the required traveling to the specialized surgeon’s office. That is why we have started to co-manage LASIK patients with the specialized surgeons of The Harman Eye Clinic (see ‘Links’ for official websites) and Northwest Eye Surgeons (see ‘Links’ for official websites). We provide the patient with the initial evaluation and all follow-up care. That way you as a patient can come to our more conveniently located office and only make one trip to the surgeon’s office. This saves you both time and money!

Humphrey Field Analyzer II

The Humphrey Fields Analyzer II is a visual field instrument. This instrument will test your side vision and your central vision. Knowing how much you are seeing and where you are seeing is extremely important for following and monitoring ocular diseases such as Glaucoma, Ocular Hypertension, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Macular Degeneration.

Although the visual field is nothing new, the wheelchair accessible Humphrey Fields Analyzer II has the latest technology for the visual fields. It has an ergonomic design for your comfort. It comes with a video monitor system to ensure proper alignment of your eye and to track your eye during the test. A gaze monitor, another feature, provides real time evaluation of your eye’s fixation. The Humphrey Fields Analyzer II will provide the most accurate visual fields test, while you are completely comfortable.

GDxVCC

While the three most common tests for glaucoma: tonometry, also known as the eye pressure check; visual field test; and optic nerve evaluation, are useful, they may not detect glaucoma early enough. The GDxVCC takes advantage of new laser evaluation technology; allowing us to detect glaucoma and other diseases in their early stages. The GDxVCC uses its technology to take a picture of the back the eye and evaluate the nerve fiber layer directly and objectively. The GDxVCC is an easy test to take with no dilation required, and test results are produced in minutes.

Pachymetry

Sonogage CORNEO-GAGE™ PLUS pachometer is acknowledged to be the most accurate and measurement-reproducible pachometers available. These benefits are due to the exclusive use of 50 MHz transducers, and 1000 measurement echo average for every displayed reading. This instument measures the thickness of the eye's cornea. The corneal thickness measurements ar applied for the successful care of glaucoma patients, hypertension suspects and refractive surgery candidates.

Retinal Photography

Retinal photography is indicated for use in many clinical settings where a permanent comprehensive view of the retina is required. Retinal photography can clearly show diabetic retinopathy as well as changes affecting the macular area and peripheral retina.
